The Absence of a Cello

November 8 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Absence of a Cello*By Ira WallachOctober 8 and 9, 2019SPI Convention Center6:30 P.M. Hors d’oeuvres and Cash Bar7:30 P.M. CurtainThe Absence of a Cello centers on a brilliant phys-icist whose research laboratory business has gone bank-rupt. He wants to take a high-paying job offered by a big corporation, but he must show the personnel director that he will fit the company profile. An MBA student who is a neighbor coaches the physicist on how to be what every company wants. The scientist trades in his rolled-up trousers for a neat suit; he hides the cello he plays with pick-up quartets; and he hides the medieval history books his scholar-wife writes. He hides, in fact, everything that he and his wife are, and he hauls out the television set. He is joined in battle by his Radcliffe daughter, an elderly neighbor who is a successful kleptomaniac, and his attractive and very smart sister whom the personnel director decides to romance. What follows is a literate comedy that is funny, smart, clever, and moving. For sheer humor it is, well, wonderfully adult.
