Action 4 News published a report yesterday that was riddled with baseless claims. It began with a reporter claiming that spring break was slower this year because she “had no issues getting on and off the island”. Then they went on to claim that perhaps there are fewer spring breakers because Coca-Cola beach isn’t around anymore, then they blamed the stabbing that occurred a couple of years ago, they then blamed the weather, then they blamed the police for being too harsh.
Coca-Cola Beach is no more: Half True
Coca-Cola pulled out as a sponsor this year. So since Coca-Cola isn’t sponsoring it anymore, let’s just call it the South Beach Free-For-All (SBFFA). The SBFFA is still around. Someone’s paid for and set up a bunch of Porta-John’s, and the party has continued. Coca-Cola pulling out means that the party isn’t organized anymore, but I understand Coca-Cola’s decision to pull out; it was a HUGE liability for them. A city official actually went so far as to say that Coke pulled out because they decided instead to focus on environmental conservation (?!?!).
If you’re noticing a reduced crowd at the SBFFA, consider this: there is now a new venue on the beach, building it’s reputation as the place to be, Clayton’s Beach Bar, which is located on the opposite end of the island to the SBFFA. This spring break, they’ve hosted Steve Aoki and are throwing a bunch of country concerts and hosting other big names like Wiz Khalifa. This means that some of the SBFFA crowd has now dispersed across the island.
There are fewer Spring Breakers on the streets: FALSE
My guess is that the reporter who claimed that the streets were empty was here on Thursday morning (the same day as the report). Thursday NIGHT is the first, decently-big night of Texas week. It isn’t until late afternoon that people begin heading down to South Padre. Additionally, fewer kids are walking around the streets because this year, a church group has come through in a HUGE way to provide free rides for Spring Breakers to anywhere they want to go, with a large fleet of 15-seater vans from Churches all over Texas. They aren’t walking because they don’t have to. Simple logic that Channel 4, the journalism pride of the RGV, didn’t seem to pick up on very well.
The cops are cracking down harder than ever: totally…errrrr…FALSE
The mayor had a stern message for all you college vagabonds out there:
If the kids think “they can run totally wild, and not have any…errrr…guidance orrrr…. or safety personnel around, well they are mistaken, and they can just go somewhere else...
Spring Breakers, please don’t go. We love you, and because we love you, we are going to make sure there are police around to keep some order. Here’s the actual issue: there have been a couple of studies done this year that shown a sharp increase in serious car accidents in March, most likely due to Spring Break. The state can’t ignore numbers like this, and so they have a team of state troopers who are staying here on the island during spring break to keep drunk drivers off the roads.
So, spring breakers everywhere, do not despair. Don’t let poor journalism change your travel plans. The island is still THE place to be for spring break, this year more than ever before. The ENTIRE beach is poppin’, as opposed to just the 500-foot SBFFA. The state is trying to keep you safer. There are more high-caliber concerts this year than we’ve had in over a decade. Aside from the Wave (the Island’s free shuttle service), the church is doing an AWESOME job of providing a safe, clean, and comfortable way to get around the island.
